Why are we reading biographies?

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What makes a person famous?

  • What makes a person well-known?

  • Are there certain qualities or careers that make someones famous?

  • Think of some famous people, who comes to mind? Why do they come to mind?

  • Biographies are written about important, well-known people for certain reasons. Below are some reasons why biographies are written about certain people:

    • Biographies are written about those who have made contributions to society

    • Biographies are written about those who have broken records

    • Biographies are written about those who have won games/competitions

    • Biographies are written about those who have broken barriers (culturally, socially, academically, etc.)

    • Biographies are written about those who have

    • Biographies are written about those who have

  • Examples of important people biographies are written about:

    • Artists

    • Athletes

    • Presidents

    • Scientists

    • Civil Rights Activists

    • Movie Stars

    • Musicians and many more!

Why are biographies written?

Good readers can determine why the subject is important...

  • When we read a biography about someone’s life, we need to stop and think, what is the big deal? Why did an author take the time to write a book about this person? What did this person accomplish in his/her life that made him/her so important? (main idea)

  • Click this link to go to a GoogleDoc where you will complete an assignment about this mini-lesson

    • You will put a picture of your biography subject (found using Google), write why you believe a book was written about that person (2-4 sentences), and write 5 accomplishments/things your subject is known for (using the timeline in the back of your biography book and the back cover of the book).

    • Through this assignment, you will be able to show your understanding of why biographies are written about certain people by analyzing why a biography was written about the subject of your chosen Who Was or Who Is book!
