for this 5th grade metaphor lesson!
Description of Lesson
Prior to this lesson, students should generally understand the different types of figurative language, specifically the differences and similarities between metaphors and similes. This lesson was designed to help students understand the differences between similes and metaphors, and be able to identify metaphors in a text. I will begin the lesson by showing an instructional flipped classroom video on YouTube that I created. Then I will have the students log on to their GoogleDrive accounts and access the metaphors assignment via GoogleDocs. Originally, this lesson was constructed to just have the work be completed on paper in the form of a worksheet. I thought that it would be better to have the students complete the activity in a technological form. This lesson will also incorporate AnswerGarden, where students will create their own metaphors and share them on a "cloud collage." To wrap up the lesson, the students will also use iPads to complete a Kahoot! This is a great educational tool to use and help students understand the lesson in a different way. I was able to incorporate gamification into this lesson with Kahoot! In addition, there will also be an enrichment activity that the students will complete the next day in class via GoogleDocs.
New Technologies
The new technologies that are incorporated into the lesson are...
-
Instructional Videos
-
AnswerGarden
-
GoogleDocs
-
Kahoot!(Gamification)
Instructional Videos
The students will watch and instructional video created by me to learn all about metaphors! The video goes through different examples, definitions, and uses of metaphors. Below are some screenshots from the video. Click here to access the video!
AnswerGarden
The students create and submit their own metaphors to the AnswerGarden feed. Each student will submit their different metaphors into the system and a "cloud collage" will be created. Below are some screenshots from the AnswerGarden website. I also created a few metaphors to show the students how to submit their metaphors and demonstrate how the cloud collage of metaphors will look. Click here to access the Metaphor AnswerGarden!
GoogleDocs
The students will access the assignment for metaphors using their GoogleDrive accounts. The assignment will serve as a formal assessment to see if the students grasped the concept of identifying, describing, and creating metaphors. The students will complete the assignment via Google Docs. Below are pictures of the Metaphor GoogleDoc assignment. Click here to access the Metaphor Assignment GoogleDoc!
Kahoot!
The students will play a Kahoot! game to review metaphors! The students will play this game to review what a metaphor is and how to decide whether a phrase is a simile or a metaphor. This activity will be a type of gamification, the students will have fun reviewing and practicing how to identify metaphors without even knowing it! Kahoot! is set up as a timed game and we will use the iPads in class. I thought this was a great way to change up a worksheet into a fun, interactive review. Below are screenshots of the Kahoot! Metaphor review. Click here to access the Metaphor Kahoot! game.
